The 3 Rules of "S" Endings

Rule 1

Quiet Ending + /s/

If a word ends in a quiet sound (like P, T, K, F), the "S" sounds like a quiet /s/:

1 cup ➔ 2 cups
1 cat ➔ 2 cats
I break ➔ he breaks
I stop ➔ he stops
Rule 2

Buzzing Ending + /iz/

If a word ends in a buzzing sound (s, z, sh, ch, dg/j), the ending sounds like /iz/:

1 page ➔ 2 pages
1 bus ➔ 2 buses
1 lunch ➔ 2 lunches
I raise ➔ he raises
I brush ➔ he brushes
I push ➔ he pushes
Rule 3

Vowel / Noisy Ending + /z/

If a word ends in a vowel sound or a noisy consonant (like M, D, N, G, V), the "S" sounds like a noisy /z/:

1 tree ➔ 2 trees (treezzz)
1 day ➔ 2 days
1 shoe ➔ 2 shoes
I fly ➔ he flies
1 game ➔ 2 games
1 head ➔ 2 heads
1 train ➔ 2 trains
1 song ➔ 2 songs

Soft C & Soft G Rules

Soft C Sound ➔ sounds like /s/

When C is followed by e, i, or y, it makes an /s/ sound:

Soft G Sound ➔ sounds like /j/

When G makes a soft /j/ sound in spelling families:

genetic, general, generator, gentle
