The "ou" and "ow" Outlaws (/aʊ/ Sound)

Usually, ou and ow make the "ouch" sound like in shout or cow:

🚨 Watch Out! Tricky Words:

These are spelled with ou but make different sounds:

  • Enough & Cousin ➔ sound like short "u" (/ʌ/)
  • Should ➔ has a silent "l" and sounds like /ʊ/

The Two Sounds of "ow"

The letters ow can make two completely different sounds!

Sound 1: /aʊ/ ("Ouch!")

Sounds like the "ow" in cow:

Sound 2: /oʊ/ (Long "O")

Sounds like the "ow" in window (same as oa / o_e):

The "oi" and "oy" Twins

Different spelling, but they make the exact same sound: /ɔɪ/ (like in toy or coin)!
