Notice how the vowel sounds change between singular, plural, and word types:
Child has a long "I" sound (/aɪ/), but Children changes to a short "I" sound (/ɪ/)!
Life (singular) and Lives (plural noun) both keep the long "I" sound (/aɪ/).
I live (/lɪv/ - short I) in London, but we are watching a live (/laɪv/ - long I) show! Also: alive (/laɪv/ - long I).
Prefix Power: "UNI-" (One / Single)
The prefix uni- comes from Latin and means one or single. Look at these words:
One style of clothing for school or work.
A single thing or a single lesson.
Joined together as one group.
An act of joining two or more things into one.
Universal: Existing everywhere as one. University: A place of higher learning.
